VMS Co. delivers 700-channel VMS server project with 5:1 failover.

VMS Co. was pleased to supply new COMPUTE™ VMS servers in the first phase of a large, 700-channel, mission-critical, video management project.

1000 Dell P1

The server build comprises six, 24-bay, high-density servers. Five servers will operate the video management system live. The sixth server is for failover, where if any live server fails, cameras are re-routed to the failover server. This 5:1 ratio offers added redundancy in the system, but at less cost than mirrored or parallel options, which would require more servers.

The high-density server description means each server has 24x HDD bays within a 2U chassis, made possible by a dedicated, hinged assembly for additional HDDs in the server lid. In this build, each server has 252TB (21x 12TB Dell HDDs) in RAID 5 and the operating system is RAID 1 on Enterprise M.2 SSDs. The entire system is 1.5 PB.

More HDDs could be added to this system and indeed larger capacity HDDs could have been used – 24x 22TB would give 528TB per server, for example. However, the build was done to the specification required and offers savings over NAS or SAN alternatives.

While we can't disclose the actual application, this project highlights our capabilities and the level of project work we do.
