Built using renewed Dell ICT hardware, MOSS servers fall within the government’s new carbon “avoidance” category. They reduce carbon emissions by over 70%, with proven longevity and a seven-year warranty.
Nick Bowden, MD of VMS Co., says, “New servers have a baseline embodied product carbon footprint (PCF) from manufacture. By deploying MOSS servers instead of new ones, customers avoid additional PCF allocations from new manufacture; hence the term ‘carbon avoidance’. Indicative carbon avoidance figures show a 70% emissions reduction compared to just 4% through recycling.”
“The government is asking businesses to account for different types of emissions in their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting calculations, including offsetting, recycling and now carbon avoidance; highlighted as an action that prevents greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere in the first place. This reporting will soon become mandatory for government agencies.
“Whilst exact PCF figures vary by server specification, a typical 1U rack server has a baseline embodied PCF of 2,600 kg CO₂e and carbon avoidance of 1,800 kg CO₂e. A typical 2U server has a baseline PCF of 4,300 kg CO₂e and carbon avoidance of 3,000 kg CO₂e. These figures are suitable for ESG reporting when comparing reused servers to newly manufactured alternatives.”
