MOSS servers qualify for ‘avoided’ carbon emissions status
In the government’s new, ICT equipment, sustainability strategy.
Video Management Servers (VMS Co.’s) renewed, purchase or subscription, Managed On Site Servers (MOSS), are classed in the ‘avoided’ emissions category, in the government’s new ICT (Information and Communications Technology) greening strategy. This new category contributes a significantly larger carbon reductions improvement than simply ‘offsetting’. Not only is the government prioritizing the reuse of ICT equipment over new, which includes servers used in CCTV applications, but it is also making it mandatory to account for the different emission types within a business, starting with government agencies.
Nick Bowden, MD of VMS Co., the specialist provider of optimized video management and analytics server solutions, said, “We welcome the government’s ICT greening strategy and the introduction of carbon ‘avoidance’. Offsetting might compensate for some emissions, but it doesn’t directly solve the problem. Avoidance is different; it actively encourages ICT reuse and will have a huge, positive, environmental impact, reducing waste, heavy use of natural resources, and unnecessary landfill.
“All ICT equipment has a ‘baseline’ carbon emission value attributed when bought new. For renewed or reused ICT equipment, such as our MOSS servers, there is now a value attributed for reused emissions. Where new servers might have between 1,000 and 3,000 kg CO₂e attributed, reused ones are 200–500 kg CO₂e. For example, where a company was procuring fifty new servers, it would incur a baseline of carbon emissions of 150,000 kg CO₂e (50 x 3000 kg CO₂e). By comparison, MOSS renewed servers would be 25,000 kg CO₂e (50 x 500 kg CO₂e). The saving is a huge 125,000 kg CO₂e, which is the avoided emissions, in this case more than 80%. For context, recycling those same servers would only contribute 4%.
“These emissions figures can also be spread over the ICT equipment’s lifecycle, which with MOSS is 7 years, due to the 7-year, field-engineer warranty. Reusing ICT equipment is the ultimate, sustainable approach. It is now a government priority which businesses can capitalise on in their sustainability strategy and accounting, when they move to renewed equipment.”
