Storage and Bandwidth
Calculating storage and bandwidth
VMS Co. will calculate the network bandwidth and storage requirements of its servers to suit the project being undertaken.
The table below gives an indication of the typical bandwidth (Mbps) and storage (TB) required for a single camera of between 2MP and 8MP (Mega Pixel) with:
- Recording profiles of 25FPS (Frames per Second), 12 FPS and 6 FPS for 31 days.
- Using H265 compression.
Camera Resolution / MP | Mbps (at 25FPS) | Storage TB | Mbps (at 12FPS) | Storage TB | Mbps (at 6FPS) | Storage TB |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2MP |
2.0 | 0.64 | 1.0 | 0.32 | 0.5 | 0.16 |
4MP |
4.0 | 1.28 | 2.0 | 0.64 | 1.0 | 0.32 |
5MP |
5.0 | 1.60 | 2.5 | 0.80 | 1.25 | 0.40 |
8MP |
8.0 | 2.56 | 4.0 | 1.28 | 2.0 | 0.64 |
How to use this table
Example: What are the network bandwidth and storage requirements for 120 channel VMS system of 4MP cameras recording at 12FPS for 31 days?
The 12FPS column shows that the bandwidth and storage requirements for a single, 4MP camera recording at 12FPS for 31 days is 2.0Mbps (bandwidth) and 0.64TB of storage.
Multiply 0.64TB by 120 (cameras) for the totals:
- Total bandwidth is 120x 2.0Mbps = 240Mbps
- Total storage is 120x 0.64TB = 76.8TB
- (for RAID 5 (hot swap), please allow an additional 1.5 x HDDs)
